VESSEL DESCRIPTION

Unique is a custom designed performance sailing catamaran. The hulls are round bilged with an inbuilt spray chine on each side of each hull.

The vessel features good boarding access from the stern of each hull and has a very large socializing cockpit complete with an inbuilt spar pool.

The cabin structure is very stylish and with large windows which give great views from inside the cabin.

The vessel is designed originally to be fitted with a high tech aero rig.

UNIQUE’S HISTORY

Gavin started to build Unique in about 1995 as part of his retirement dream for himself and his wife Diane. Health reasons have meant that Gavin is not able to complete his dream.

Gavin is an experienced sailor so it was important for the vessel had to have good sailing qualities.  It also had to be a very liveable vessel and strong as Gavin’s plans included cruising the entire New Zealand coast.  Being a “Southern Man” Gavin was very mindful of the foul weather that can be served up around New Zealand’s coast so the vessel had to be built to cope with whatever came.  Plenty of deck space and in particular a generous after deck cockpit is devoted to alfresco entertaining, complete with an inbuilt spar pool.

The ability to charter the vessel also came into the planning.  Ventilation throughout the vessel was important and being a boat builder’s own boat, the vessel was to be uncomplicated and easy to maintain with good access to all areas.  Workmanship is without compromise and the finish is to super yacht standard.  A real tribute to a true craftsman.

Gavin has been actively involved in boat design and building since 1964.  Over this period, 30 of his innovative designs have from his extensive portfolio have been successfully commercialised, including the 36 ft catamaran “Freedom Machine”, leading to the production of approximately 2000 vessels, a number if which have gone to offshore clients.  Gavin can also add to his comprehensive abilities, New Zealand titleholder in yachting, and power boating in both Vee bottoms and tunnel hull catamarans.  Gavin is the only New Zealander who has designed, built and driven and sailed both powerboats and yachts to achieve National titles.

CONSTRUCTION

The hull and deck and cabin structures are composite GRP using epoxy composite below the waterline and orthothelic polyester for most of the other laminates.

Core materials are high-density foam and cedar below the waterline.

Carbon fibre and Kevlar have been used in high load areas.

The hulls are stiffened with Kevlar and carbon fibre stringers, ring frames and plywood bulkheads.

Watertight bulkheads are fitted fore and aft of each hull

Exterior surfaces have been filled and faired to a high standard and are finished in 2 pack products.

LAYOUT

There are double berth cabins aft in each hull with toilet and shower areas forward of this.  The starboard hull has a pantry/storage area while the port hull has the navigation/office area. Further forward in each hull is another double berth cabin with single berths in the forepeaks.

The main saloon area on the bridge deck has a large circular dinette area in the centre with the galley area to starboard.  The galley has a large custom bench area with matching other work surfaces incorporating all the appliances.

On the port side is an entertainment area.

The cockpit is large with a helm station forward on each side with additional seating.  Aft in the centre is a spar bath with fixed seating around.  The pool top converts to a tabletop or a sun lounger.

MACHINERY AND ENGINEERING

Auxiliary propulsion comes from 2 x 60 HP 4 stroke gasoline outboard motors.  These are mounted in apertures and are capable of being lifted clear of the water.

The outboards have been fitted with heavy-duty bottom ends with reduced reduction to allow for a bigger propeller. The propellers have prop guards fitted.

Twin steering stations are provided but engine controls are only at the port helm station.

Two fuel tanks are fitted giving a total of 352 litres.

PLUMBING AND SANITATION

Two water tanks are fitted giving a total capacity of 900 litres.  Pressure hot and cold fresh water is provided to each toilet and shower area and the galley.  A cockpit shower is also provided at the ft end of the port hull.

Hot water is provided by 2 gas califonts.

Electric and manual bilge pumps are fitted into each hull.

Heated saltwater is used in the spar pool

Two Caroma domestic type flush toilets are fitted and are connected to black water tanks in each hull.  Pumps and deck discharge for these tanks are fitted.

Toilets are saltwater flushed with on demand electric pumps.

ELECTRONIC AND ELECTRICAL

The vessel has been set up with a 12 DC electrical system with comprehensive BEP DC distribution panel to monitor and control circuits.

Batteries include 2 x 70 amp hour start batteries and 3 x 250 amp hour house batteries.  Appropriate fusing and isolating switches are provided.

Modern lighting is provided through the vessel.

Additional battery charging is provided by an array of solar panels.

An AC system is also provided with AC power provided via shore power or from a Xantrax inverter charger.

Electronics include:

Duplicate Simrad sailing instruments

Marine VHF transceiver

Sony stereo system

21-inch plasma television

DOMESTIC EQUIPMENT

A stainless steel LPG wall oven is fitted along with a 4-burner gas hob. An extractor fan is fitted over the gas hob.

A microwave oven is also fitted.

A domestic type fridge and freezer is to be fitted.

Gas bottles are installed in a dedicated locker forward on deck and re fitted with remote solenoid shut off valves and gas detectors.  Gas detectors are also fitted in the fuel tank lockers.

DECK EQUIPMENT

2 Harken aluminium 53 ST electric sheet winches handle sheets and halyards.  A bank of Harken and Lewmar jammers hold all control lines and halyards.

Halyards and control lines will lead under the bridge deck to keep the decks and cockpit as clear as possible.

The engines lifts are controlled by separate worm drive winches, one for each engine.

A built in arch aft incorporates a dinghy davit and also provides support for the cockpit bimini.

There are several large lockers for fenders, sails and spare cordage.

Two custom anchor hawsers are provided at the forward end of the bridge deck. Anchor chain and warp lockers are incorporated at the front of the bridge deck.

An arch between the hulls across the aft end of the cockpit supports the mainsheet system, solar panels and incorporated the dinghy davits.

SPARS

The vessel was originally designed with a Aero rig and some tooling has been started for the spar construction. The carbon fibre base structure for the rotating spar has been completed and is moulded into the bridge deck.

Provision in the construction of the vessel has been made to accept a more conventional rig.

SITUATION

Unique has now been in the water for 18 months and still has some finishing work to be completed. To date the vessel appears to be meeting her design criteria.

The exterior is mostly complete with the exception of the fabric biminis and the trampoline.

The onboard systems that have mostly been completed and commissioned and appear to be functioning as designed.

Most of the interior work to be completed is timber panelling and trim and other cosmetic decorating. Again a good deal of this is made and is waiting for final installation.

The rig has yet to be built.

It should be stressed that the workmanship on all aspects on the vessel is to a very high standard.
